Opinion: Did Jeff Gordon purposely Spin Matt Kenseth?

Look, yes Matt Kenesth was blocking but what else can you expect..its racing. The point is to beat the driver behind you or pass the one in front of you. So, blocking, like bumping (not ramming), is part of racing. Now...in my opinion...Jeff Gordon had the quicker car and it was only a matter of time before he got a good enough run and passed Kenseth. With that said..Gordon clearly had no problem dumping the #17. Yes, Kenseth got lose underneath Casey Mears (because of his car fading) resulting in him getting off the gas but Gordon saw this, but the opportunity to send him spinning was to good. So, my point..Gordon could have gotten off the gas, waited till Kenseth passed Mears and then drove by him. And to address the blocking..there is only so much racetrack to block and Kenseth clearly wanted the bottom, even that would not have mattered..Gordon was strong up top aswell...so...

What do you think?

(note: copied from my comment below since brock created a whole opinion piece on this)

As much as I don't like Gordon and I had picked Kenseth to win, I can't blame Gordon for this one. After watching the replays numerous times, it's clear that Kenseth slowed down in the turn and did not get back on the gas. He was clearly blocking, which I believe is against NASCAR's rules (could be wrong). However, even leading up to that point, it was clear that Gordon's car was better and he was going to pass him.

Also, it's pretty much a non-issue anyway, as Kenseth ran out of gas and would have ran out prior to the finish had the wreck not occurred. I think Matt was trying to do whatever he could to hold the lead, but that cost him as Jeff had the better car. I'm not a Gordon fan, but I don't think he did anything wrong there and other drivers would have done the same thing.

I'm just glad that Dale Jr. had a good day on the 1.5 mile tracks.

Huh, its a close call between the two. It seems as if Gordon could have slowed but you can never tell when his car was so much better than Kenseths. Not a good end to a race in my opinion.

Damn, I could go all day about this but I will try to make it short. I don't like Jeff Gordon or any of the drivers of Hendricks. They all have that "I'm squeeky clean" attitudes. Kenseth was blocking and I believe Gordon was not going to spin him out right away but the blocking combined with their bristol run in made it an easier decision later on.

Now, Kenseth would have gotten the boot a lot earlier for blocking, even though that is part of racing. But thats why I'm not a race driver.

I wish all the cry babies on the Nascar circuit would stop their whining. Racing is blocking, bumping, and winning if your car is good. Jeff's car was good and he won. Get over it.

Yes I am a diehard Jeff Gordon fan. The run in with Matt Kenseth at Bristol probably and should have played a part in the spin out at Chicago, but that is and always will be real racing, not made up Nascar racing rules. What's the big fuss about anyway? Kenseth ran out of gas and clearly Gordon had the better of the two cars. Gordon haters, GET OVER IT! I bet fans would not be so eager to jump on the negative wagon if it was, say-------#8 car who can do no wrong.

I dont blame Gordon for spinning Kenseth out but I believe that Nascar always seems to find a way to help Gordon and Johnson pull back into it. There always seems to be suspect caution calls when it is to their benefit. Gordon would not have been in position to spin him out if not for their help!

Only Jeff Gordon can truly answer that question. Jeff IS the better driver and had the better car. I believe Jeff saved his car for the last 10 or so laps and within the last 5 he sure caught up to Kenseth quickly. It may have been payback for Bristol, but Jeff is the only one that knows for sure.

AS MUCH AS I LIKE NASCAR THE FANS ARE MY REASON FOR BEING DISAPPOINTED IN THE SPORT. ALL 43 DRIVERS PUT THIER LIVES IN DANGER TO MAKE IT A SPORT AND THE FAN SHOW HOW STUPID THER ARE BY THROWING TRASH ON THE TRACK. I WOULD NOT ADMIT TO BEING AT CHICAGOLAND TRACK.

Gordon did have the better and it is against Nascar rule to block which is what Kenseth was doing! I am not a Gordon fan either, but the better car won!!

Jeff Gordan may be a good driver but his is #1 on the whiny list. Everytime something bad happens to him on the race track he whines, blames other people, and turns around and does the same thing the next week to someone else. Just shut-up Jeff and race that's what you get paid to do.STOP WHINING!!!!!

Obviously Jeff Gordan did something wrong...He pretty much told on himself in his comment after the race. And if you ask me, I think a lot more people think Jeff Gordan was in the wrong than just me, or were they all at the race track trashing Gordan's car Sunday.

I agree with the guy who said Hendrick's drivers have that "I'm squeaky clean" attitude. I could not agree more. When is NASCAR going to really get on Gordan's case. He gets by with so much and it's ridiculous. It's time to put it to an end NASCAR. Gordan is no better than the other 42 drivers on the race track. Quit treating him like royalty. You'll get a lot more respect and a lot more viewers if you would treat him the same as the other drivers. Didn't Sunday's trash throwing incident prove that. I have been to many races and more times than none, Gordan is "booed" more than any other driver. NASCAR fans are sick of Gordan and "I'm the NASCAR God" attitude. I'm not trying to compeltely bash Gordan. His stats would say that he is a good driver, but what you have to take into consideration is how he achieved all of those wins. Yeah, bumping and banging is part of the game, but when it is made so obvious that it was intentional then even NASCAR gets onto the drivers, excluding Gordan. That's why he is considered a "Great" driver, because he is able to get away with knocking a guys back end off and not having to face NASCAR's consequences after the race. He knows he can get by with it and until someone really puts a stop to him, he is going to keep doing it.

As for all Gordan fans, 95% of them are women who only like them because they think he's cute. That's not a real NASCAR Fan. Real NASCAR fans like drivers because of their driving style and understanding of the sport.

Jeff did what any other driver probably would have done it's part of the sport. No, I don't think Jeff wanted to take Matt out but it happened. When a driver decides to block someone what do you expect.I could name a few cry babies after a race but who cares as it's a race and may the best driver win!!!!

give Gordon the respect he is due. You don't win 75 races because Nascar officials make it easy for you. To win that many times it takes talent pure and simple. Kenseth does his share of whining so does Tony until recently when things have been going good. It's all a show folks, get over it route for your favorite driver next week and enjoy it, lifes too short to worry who did what to who

everyone seems to have forgotten how a certain number 3 got to win so many races.........who was also booed by most of the fans during the middle of his career.....perhaps history is repeating itself

A good driver would have let Kenseth live and passed him clean in the next corner. By taking Kenseth out, Gordon gets his revenge for Bristol and keeps his buddy, Jimmie, in the points lead. Plain and simple. Gordon had a choice and made the wrong one.

I don't know if spinning another driver out is racing...rubbing yea but ramming other drivers is not.
