Jimmie Johnson Victorious at Daytona

The 2006 Daytona Race was as exciting as expected. Even though some drivers did not finish the way they would have preferred, one driver and team will be celebrating for the next few days. Jimmie Johnson hung around the top five all day long and was really patient, waiting for other drivers to make the mistake and take themselves out of contention. Late in the race Johnson held off late charges from Dale Jr. and Ryan Newman to win his first Daytona 500.

Other drivers found today's race a tough 500 miles including Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray, Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth. Tony Stewart was in the middle of much of the controversy, having run-in's with Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch. Other drivers who had good runs were Elliott Sadler, Brian Vickers, Casey Mears, Kenny Schrader and Clint Bowyer.
